Low Back Pain in Golf
There are several factors that can cause and are high predictors of lower back in golfers.
Body Mass Index (BMI): which is a ratio of your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. Interestingly the below average BMI group (<25.7kg/m2) that was more likely to develop LBP in a study done by Evans et al. Physical Therapy in Sport 2005. So tall, slender golfers were more likely to have LBP than shorter heavy golfers.
Side bend endurance test
In golfers that were tested by McGill et al 1999, with left side endurance that was greater than their right side by >12.5 seconds were most likely to have LBP. The side bend endurance test is a good measure of abdominal, glute and overall core stabilization.
Lead hip internal rotation
Professional golfers with limited range into internal rotation of the lead hip were found by Vad et al. (2004) to be more likely to develop LBP. This important range of motion in your hip is key to being able to adequately post and stabilize the lower body during impact. A dysfunction in this range places excessive forces on the lower lumbar spine.
Hip Flexor Length
Although tight hip flexors affect golf performance they were not associated with having LBP. This is predominantly due to the fact that restricted hip flexors affect golfers set up posture and posture through the backswing, which will lead to performance issues.
